individual development - scenarios
Learning from a bad experience
This is someone who has been involved in a difficult situation from which they have rightly or wrongly emerged as the party at fault. They need to find a way to clarify what went wrong and to move on equipped with fresh wisdom for how to make ‘the next time’ go well.
Technical leader turned people leader
The brilliant technician who has been asked to lead part of the company and is finding the transition less than straightforward. They need to refresh their innate abilities with people. Specifically, they need to find and develop their own, successful style.
Shedding an unfavourable reputation
A person who has done very well in the organisation by handling their relationships in a particular way. This interpersonal style may now be seen as inappropriate or offensive and may therefore be hampering the individual’s effectiveness in their role. Career progress may also be suffering. This person needs to understand the very specifics of their behaviour and attitudes so that they can develop a wider range of ways of handling situations and people. This is partly a process of them re-educating their colleagues, over a period of time.
A hidden talent looking for a louder voice
This is the individual who takes a while to come to know but is worth their weight in gold. They tend to hold back in meetings or defer to ‘big personalities’ around the table. They have a tendency to end up internally frustrated at their own quietness or at the volubility of others. They need to find their ‘voice’ in order to be more widely and more quickly respected.
All work and no life
This person might have once been dubbed a workaholic. This particular individual swings from appearing to thrive on pressure to looking as though they are headed for burnout. They tend to retain responsibilities they could well shed and trust few people to execute as well as they would. There are signs that their home life may be suffering. The person in this situation needs the time and a sensitive but firm sounding board to enable them to get the different demands on their life in balance.
