Most people can identify the bits about their way of thinking, their interpersonal communication, their leadership style, the way that they present themselves or their emotional intelligence that they want to improve.

Actually making improvements sometimes requires outside help. But there is actually plenty that you can do for yourself first (or for the person who is hoping to change something about themselves). Even preparing yourself properly to do some work with someone outside your organisation will pay you dividends.

No matter what the individual objective, what we do with clients in our executive coaching programme is to help them to develop some critical capabilities. These enhanced capabilities help them to carry on learning for themselves, outside their sessions with our coaches.

Here are the capabilities that we think are amongst the most important:

  1. Awareness of your own emotions and their triggers.
  2. Building a very simple map of the effects on others of your 6 'classic' behaviours.
  3. Developing your capability for empathy.

I have written a series of short articles and exercises that I will be publishing to the FAQ section of the Members' area of the site. Access is free. This facility is due to go live at the end of April 2009 (hopefuly sooner).
